Natural Remedies for Eczema and Psoriasis

I developed a severe outbreak of Psoriasis when I was 16. Light therapy and creams (topical steroids) helped then, but as I got older, my body because immune to the steroids and it wasn’t as effective. So, I’ve struggled with psoriasis on and off for the last 20 years.

Also after having children, strangely I developed atopic dermatitis, (eczema) on my hands–specifically my right ring fingers (on both hands), regardless if I was wearing rings. Sometimes it would spread to my entire hand. I would itch it constantly and it became un-manageable. I started  wearing cloth gloves daily with a heavy amount of vaseline to relive the pain and constant itch. I definitely couldn’t wear rings anymore.

In seeing dermatologist over the years, they are quick to provide topical steroids or topical solutions with little result. However, they avoided looking at the root cause. I knew there had to be more natural solutions to this problem but didn’t know where to start. I had experimented with herbs in the past (primarily soaking in herbs), but I didn’t experience any long term effects.

After my second child was born, I  wanted to immerse myself in learning more about natural solutions and plant based medicine. I started using doTERRA essential oils and their products. I was willing and desperate to try anything.

I learned that psoriasis and eczema are autoimmune issues, which are a result of abnormal functioning in the immune system and gut health.
Also, for me, my flare ups were caused by stress, lack of sleep, and cold weather.

I am grateful to say that I no longer have eczema flare ups like I did in the past. I might have an itch here and there only on my right ring finger, but that’s a long way from an entire hand. As far as psoriasis, I still have some plaques, but it’s far less observable that the past, plus there have been no plaque additions or flare ups.

Here’s what I’ve been doing:

  1. Taking supplements, Life Long Vitality Pack, this is doTERRA’s number one selling product for a reason. Plus it has a 30-day money back guarantee:

    Eczema Skin Salve
    1/2 cup extra-virgin coconut oil
    1/4 cup avocado oil
    1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
    3 tbsp. beeswax pastilles
    3/4 tsp. vitamin E (I use 3 of the 1000 I.U. softgels)
1/2 tsp arrowroot powder or cornstarch (to cut greasiness)
    15 drops lavender essential oil
    15 drops melaleuca essential oil
    12 drops thyme essential oil
    15 drops geranium essential oil
    10 drops frankincense essential oil

Combine first 4 ingredients in a pint jar and place in a pot half-filled with water. Bring water to a boil and stir frequently until ingredients are completely melted. Remove jar from pan and place on a dish-towel covered counter. Slowly add arrowroot powder, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.  Allow mixture to cool enough that you can touch the jar comfortably for at least ten seconds. Add vitamin E and the essential oils and stir. Immediately pour into desired containers and cover with a piece of paper towel so nothing weird gets into it. Do not disturb for several hours and preferably overnight. Once completely cooled, put lids on and store at room temperature.
    Makes approx. 8 oz.

  9. Exercise — I recommend hot yoga or anything that makes your sweat (this helps detoxify the skin and body, which is very good for gut health.
  10. Avoid processed flour and sugar and alcohol. I know this part is hard for many, but it worked wonders for me— and if you can’t avoid all those substances, then at least try to reduce!
